aAbout Sri Lanka Cricket
|
| |
Cricket being a game much closer to the hearts of every Sri Lankan, from the professional to the commoner and a child to an adult, has now become a ‘way of life’, in Sri Lanka. The game is more zealously and relentlessly played here than its founder nation, the British, who ruled this Island for a considerable period. The oldest record on cricket, the Colombo Journal of 3 November 1832, had an article published of a cricket match played by the Colombo Cricket Club, entirely comprising of expatriate members, which condition for the membership persisted until 1961. We entered the first game of international cricket in 1975, and were subsequently awarded Test status in 1981 making Sri Lanka the eighth consecutive Test playing nation. Eventually, reaching its zenith, Sri Lanka won the World Championship in 1996.
Today, with the distinction established through the World Championship and being triumphant over many other matches played with world renounced teams, our national team proudly maintains its dignity and the ranking in the apex of the world cricket, bringing honor and fame to the country. We proudly claim for several cricket grounds which are scattered across the island and they are all built to the international standards.
The country co-hosted the 1996 Cricket World Cup with India and Pakistan, and has hosted the Asia Cup tournament on numerous occasions. Sri Lanka will also co-host the 2011 Cricket World Cup schedule to be held in February/ March 2011.This is explicitly projected to be a splendid show of the century for which we have elaborate plans already made for you to visit Sri Lanka to join the merriment and enjoy the matches in the best of comforts we have planned to provide. |

Colombo is divided into 15 zones. The three main zones are Pettah - the bustling bazaar area, Fort - so called as it was a military garrison during the Portuguese and Dutch occupation (16-18 century), the Cinnamon Gardens-now fashionably known as Colombo 07, with its spacious mansions and better residential areas.
