OVER NIGHT
Day - 01

 

 

Welcome on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport by a Sunway Holiday representative and transfer to Negombo, 20 minutes drive North from the airport. In the afternoon an information briefing will be held regarding the tour along with a welcome drink. There after do a sight seeing tour of Negombo. Negombo is a characteristic fishing town 37 k.m. North of Colombo, it is a mere 6 k.m. from the International airport. Set amid lush groves of coconut palms, it breathes the spirit of the sea. Negombo is a gourmet’s paradise with seafood in plenty. Old World fishing craft like the outrigger canoe and the catamaran bring seer, skipjack, herring and mullet, pomfret and amber - jack while lobster and prawns are caught in the lagoon. Visit the remaining of the Dutch period, a Buddhist temple and a Catholic church, the bazaar area, the fish market and the Negombo lagoon. Overnight stay in Negombo.

Day - 02

 

 

After breakfast drive to Dambulla. En-route visit the Pinnawela Elephant orphanage. This orphanage was established mainly to house young elephants who find themselves displaced and lost from their natural habitats for various reasons, environmental changes due to development projects, being abandoned by their parents when they fall into pits and ravines. Some animals are found diseased or wounded. They are brought to the orphanage for treatment and to be taken care of. It was established in 1975 and several animals brought here at the inception are now mature enough for breeding, which is the ultimate aim of the institution. Witness the feeding and bathing activities of the elephants. In the afternoon visit the Dambulla Cave Temples. Dambulla is a vast isolated rock mass and it was here that King Valagam Bahu took refuge in the 1st century B.C. He later turned the caves into a rock temple. Some of the frescoes are over 2,000 years old and there is a colossal figure of the recumbent Buddha carved out of the living rock, 14 meters long. There after drive to the hotel. Over night stay in Dambulla.

Day - 03

 

After breakfast do an excursion to Sigiriya. Visit and climb the 200 meter tall Rock Fortress. This rock fortress was built by king Kasyapa in the 5th century A.D. and was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. In a sheltered pocket, approached by a spiral stairway, are the famous frescoes. The summit of the rock, with an area of nearly one hc. Was the site of the palace, the outer wall of which was built on the very brink of the precipice. The UNESCO - sponsored Central Cultural Fund has restored Sigiriya’s 5th century Water Gardens to their former glory. There after drive to Polonnaruwa. The Island’s medieval capital (11th - 13th century A.D.). Witness the ruins of this beautiful city. Polonnaruwa rose to fame after the decline of Anuradhapura. The city in its day was fortified with three concentric walls, beautified with parks and gardens and sanctifies by many shrines. A unique irrigation complex known as the Sea of Parakrama watered the city as well as the surrounding plains. The largest of the man made reservoirs, the huge Parakrama Samudra, is larger in size than Colombo harbour. See also the ruins of the King’s Council Chamber, the Royal Citadel, the Kumara Pokuna, Royal Pavilion: Siva Devale (11th century Hindu Temple), the Thuparama with its original vaulted roof, the Vatadage Relic House, lavished with moonstones, guard-stones and sculptured railing, Kiri Vehera the best preserved of all Sri Lanka’s unrestored dagabas; Gal Vihare - the most impressive sculptures are the colossal Buddha. Over night stay in Dambulla.

Day - 04

After breakfast drive to Kandy. En-route visit the Aluviharaya Temple. An ancient rock temple of great significance in the history of Buddhism. The Buddhist canon and its commentaries, which were till then handed down orally, were written for the first time at Aluvihara Temple. Also in Matale visit a spice garden to witness the spice producing trees and creapers, a batik factory to see how batik fabricks are being produced. In Kandy check in to the Hotel. Over night stay in Kandy.

Day - 05

 

After breakfast do a sight seeing tour of Kandy. Sri Lanka’s hill capital, strong hold of the Sinhala Kings, is our most beautiful town. It is 488 meters above sea level and next to Colombo is Sri Lanka’s most visited place. The focal point of the town is, without doubt, the golden roofed Delude Malaga where the Sacred Tooth of the Buddha is enshrined. Major restoration work is in progress here by the UNESCO - aided Central Cultural Fund. The highlight of the year is the Sale Perahera, when a replica of the relic casket is taken in procession accompanied by exotically costumed dancers, drummers and about 80 to 100 elephants during ten glittering nights in July / August. Visit the upper lake drive, the Kandy lake, the market area, a gem museum, a wood carving factory and the Temple of the Tooth Relic. In the afternoon visit the botanical gardens in Peradeniya. This garden is noted for its large number and great variety of plants, indigenous as well as introduced. The gardens contain over 4,000 species and varieties making it one of the best and most valuable collections in the world. One of the main attractions is the Orchid House. In the evening witness a cultural dance performance followed by fire walking. Over night stay in Kandy.

Day - 06

 

After breakfast drive to Nuwaraeliya. En-route visit a tea plantation to see the workers plucking tea leaves and a tea factory to view the manufacturing process of Ceylon tea. In the afternoon do a sight seeing tour of Nuwaraeliya. Set in the heart of the tea country this beautiful town is where the British succeeded in creating an English countryside with homes in styles from Georgian to Queen Anne. Well-kept lawns with hedges, an Anglican church and the famous golf course and beautiful parks give the place an air of nostalgia. Situated 1890 meters above sea level, the air here is cool and fresh. Over night stay in Nuwaraeliya.

Day - 07

 

After breakfast drive to Colombo via Kitulgala. En-route pass by beautiful scenery and the St. Clair’s and Devon’s water falls. Also visit the location where the worlds famous film “Bridge on the River Kwai” was filmed. In the afternoon do a sight seeing tour of Colombo. Sri Lanka’s capital up-to recent times. Colombo is a fascinating city not only for a comfortable blend of east and west, but also a cozy mixture of the past and present. It is still the commercial centre of the country. Colombo is divided into 15 zones. The three main zones are Pettah - the bustling bazaar area, Fort - so called as it was a military garrison during the Portuguese and Dutch occupation (16-18 century), the Cinnamon Gardens-now fashionably known as Colombo 07, with its spacious mansions and better residential areas. Visit the Gangarama Temple, Fort area, Pettah area, the independence square, BMICH (conference hall), the old parliament and town hall. Also a visit to the shopping malls is possible. Over night stay in Colombo.
